Become a Substitute Teacher in North Dakota

Under the NDESPB, applicants seeking employment as a substitute teacher in North Dakota Public Schools can do so through one of the following licensures:

  1. Regular two- or five-year teaching license
  2. Out-of-State Reciprocal Teaching License
  3. Out-of-State Highly Qualified License
  4. Life License
  5. Re-Entry License
  6. Probationary License
  7. Interim Licenses are available to those who hold one of the following:
    • 40-day Provisional License, available to new graduates
    • Out-of-State License (or those who want to be a substitute teacher)
    • Teacher Education degree without Praxis testing
    • Bachelor’s Non-Teaching Content Area

Interm Licenses are also available for those who have not met the re-education requirements for a previous license.
