Become a Substitute Teacher in Utah

Substitute Teaching

Utah substitute teaching requirements are determined by the states’ individual LEAs (local education agencies). Please contact your local LEA for more information regarding the district’s application and hiring processes.

The following requirements apply to all individuals seeking a substitute teaching position in the state of Utah:

  • Substitute teachers may not serve in a teaching position for more than eight consecutive weeks in the same academic year and in the same class and/or with the same students. Exceptions apply to individuals who hold an appropriate license for the subject and/or grade level.
  • All substitute teachers must submit to periodic criminal background checks.
  • While it is suggested that all substitute teachers hold a valid license and/or college degree, it is up to the hiring LEA to evaluate if individuals are capable of carrying out instructional programs and classroom management skills.
